Case Study Competition:
The case study competition is an excellent opportunity for both professional and interpersonal growth. Students work together to coordinate a program that resolves a problem for a given situation (i.e., academic development, membership retention, fundraising, etc.). Each team, by collaborating with one another, works out the details of their program and present to a group of judges that will provide constructive feedback. Such feedback is meant to further nurture the student’s critical thinking capabilities.
This year’s case studies will have a new twist that will allow company representatives to both interview and directly work with students. Professional will serve as mentors for individual case study groups, while guiding them in compiling a program for a specific case study topic. RLDC’s focus is to “Develop Pack Leaders.” Thus, it is important that students work directly with current leaders to develop and improve their own professional and leadership skills. This direct communication, between students and professional, is what the goals of RLDC aim. To create an environment in which students are able to network with other individuals in an effort to foster leadership development.

Officer transition
Should prepare the incoming board by facilitating a smooth transition. Every year when it is time to change from one board to another there is a period of adjustment and many times the new board has to start from scratch. Programs in this area should coordinate activities to prepare strong leaders for the organization that can easily adjust to the challenges of their new position.
Recruitment and retention
Should recognize that the most important part of an organization is its members. To develop any other program successfully the organization must have active members willing to volunteer their time. Thereby, programs should include strategies to recruit potential members, and encourage the current members to be active.
Outreach and community involvement
Projects must emphasize the importance of building a positive educational community. Programs must promote social interaction, proactive education and scientific activities.
Academic and professional development
Projects should develop creative activities to promote learning and professional behavior. Programs must prepare students to represent the organization, motivate them to improve their academic and professional performance and stimulate their intellectual ability.

Workshops:
This year’s theme, “Developing a Pack Leader”, will focus on the various qualities necessary for exceptional leadership. In order to be capable of leading a group, the pack leader must cohesively integrate honesty, consistency, integrity, and confidence. Although these skills are basic, they are essential for leaders to demonstrate they are capable of directing others. Through interactive leadership workshops attendees will be taught and demonstrated how these skills can be developed and utilized for their future leadership positions.
All students will attend a total of five workshops. However, students will have the opportunity to request two workshops. We will be allocating students to specific rooms on a first come first serve, so if you really want to attend a specific workshop make sure to register as early as possible.
- Note: All student chapters are required to submit to the RLDC region 2 a list of the workshops their attendees want to participate in. Please send list to Joshua Muñoz (

Being a Star Engineer: Essential Tactics to Shine on the Job
Your first year on the job after college will be like no other in your life. The predictable rhythm of school disappears, and it is replaced by unfamiliar routine, mysterious organizational culture, and often confusing relationships. You are solidly in the middle of the important transition between your well-worn image as a student and your nascent image as an engineering professional. Learn the tips and practices you should master to not only survive your first year on the job but to excel and establish a reputation of professional success.
Let’s Talk: Communication and Listening Skills
Teamwork is essential across all disciplines of work, especially the areas in which a group is formed with each member assigned to different tasks. Although one may be confident in his or her work, beats deadlines, and shows skill in his or her particular area, the entire team must be successful, possible only through effective communication. It will be expected at the conference that the attendees are leaders, or would like to be leaders in committees or organizations at school. Therefore, this workshop will provide great practices and exercises in which the students alternate roles of speaking, listening, and asking effective questions, the same way they should perform as a group leader at their school. It is not difficult to acquire a speaker for this subject since a specialist in any field can speak about effective communication. The workshop will turn leaders into effective listeners so that the entire group they lead can complete jobs efficiently and bring out more success in their field of work.
Keeping it Cool: Stress Relief & Organization Skills
The idea of a stress-reduction and organization technique class comes from one that can be attended while in the McNair Program. It is a workshop with an instructor that is familiar with the wide gamut of impasses that students face while taking classes and keeping involved in student organizations or academic programs. The workshop will take common-place, stress-full situations and guide the students to new ways to handle a busy schedule that incorporates studying and work. Ideas from the audience will also be considered and the group can have a discussion on ways they handle stress. The workshop is ideal for the conference since it is expected that the attendees are motivated students at their own school, however they share the same time-management challenges as any involved student has. UCSD has a few different resources from which we can contact someone who works in counseling services, or academic advising, or any field that involves organizing an academic schedule.
EOYR Workshop/AHETEMS
In order to showcase and display your chapter's accomplishments and properly document the yearly activities and goals; it is imperative that all chapter leaders understand the importance of how to properly compile an End of The Year Report. RLDC is the most appropriate time to help chapters with answering their questions and concerns regarding the expectations of this process. All chapters are required to submit a report and it is crucial that all chapter leaders submit reports that can lead to national recognition but most importantly proper documentation of goals and accomplishments.
