The UCSD SHPE chapter was established in 1986. The hope of establishing the chapter was to create a medium in which the small population of Hispanic/Latino students studying engineering could network with other Hispanic engineers in the area. It was soon apparent that networking was just one of the many benefits that the UCSD SHPE Chapter would provide to students. The role of the chapter has evolved where it now serves as a way for students to receive tips and encouragement to excel academically and professionally. The UCSD SHPE chapter has worked well with other organizations here at UCSD. The chapter worked very closely with what used to be the MESA program at UCSD. Although the MESA program no longer exists at UCSD, the chapter is currently working with the MEP program and director to continue to offer those lost benefits back to the students. The chapter is also affiliated with the umbrella organization called Triton Engineering Student Council (TESC). Under TESC, the chapter is qualified to receive additional funding from the Corporate Affiliates Program and funds that TESC is able to provide to our organization. Additionally, our SHPE Chapter also works with UCSD's Academic Enrichment Programs which includes programs such as the California Alliance for Minority Participation (CAMP) and the McNair Program. The UCSD SHPE chapter has taken a very active role in giving back to the San Diego community. In the year 1999, the chapter began to do outreach at an elementary school in the Barrio Logan area of San Diego. The chapter is one of very few engineering student organizations that does outreach at a school in a socioeconomic disadvantaged area of San Diego. This student chapter is a well recognized organization here at campus. It will continue to be a recognized organization through all the services and events that SHPE will participate in for years to come. Chapter website: http://shpe.ucsd.edu/ |
